Unit Heraldry and History
This patch was worn by the 9th Infantry Division, nicknamed the "Old Reliables". The design uses an eight-petaled octofoil symbol, which comes from 15th-century heraldry where it represented the ninth son. The red top section symbolises the artillery, while the blue lower section represents the infantry, set around a white central circle on an olive background.
Field Specifications and Design
The patch features full-colour thread stitching on a sturdy olive drab cloth base with a bound outer edge. Designed as an official shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI), it was worn on the left shoulder of service and field dress uniforms. The reverse shows standard white bobbin thread backing from original embroidery production.
